Directed by Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones) and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer (Pirates of the Caribbean), Prince of Persia looked set to be a great movie and probably the best mainstream movie based on a video game to date.
The movie is loosely based on the popular Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time game in 2003. It does well to hold to elements of the game, which fans will be pleased with. Even in details such as the opening scene and, obviously, the Prince's acrobatic abilities, the movie really does well.
The Prince, Dastan, is played by Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko, Jarhead) and the Princess, Tamina, by Gemma Arterton (Clash of the Titans, Quantum of Solace). Both of these actors aren't bad in terms of their ability and they do a pretty good job in the movie of conveying the characters.
Prince of Persia is action packed, that's for sure. A big budget has resulted in plenty of special effects and huge settings, making it a very enjoyable movie and a great rendition of the game. Bruckheimer's vision appears to be a Pirates of The Caribbean set in Persia and that's what the movie really goes for. The humour is similar to Pirates of the Caribbean in that the Prince and Princess have a love / hate relationship (similar to the game in many ways as well) and the movie doesn't try and take itself too seriously.
It's worth watching it. We enjoyed ourselves very much !!
